Impressing on her breathtaking voice and soulful dedication, in the last seven years the Portuguese Fado singer Mariza has conquered the status of the great divas, winning the devotion of audiences and critics around the world. Although she was born in Mozambique, she spent most of her childhood in the Lisbon neighbourhood of Mouraria, the birthplace of "the Portuguese blues". Singing from an early age at her parents' restaurant, she eventually caught the attention of a producer, and in 2001 "Fado em Mim" became an instant success in Portugal and abroad, turning her into a World Music rising star. Several prizes and award winning records followed, including the Grammy nominated "Transparente" (2005), that established her has the legitimate heiress of Amolia, and Portugal's new ambassador of its national song.
Her latest album "Terra" - Earth - marks the beginning of a new cycle, born out of all the different cultures the singer assimilated while on tour for seven consecutive years. In "Terra", Mariza spices up her rendition of Fado with sprinkles of flamenco, Capeverdian "morna", Portuguese Folk, Jazz and Salsa, adding in the mix guest World Music stars such as Cape Verdean Tito Paris, Cuban Chucho Valdes or Brazilian Ivan Lins.
With her naturally magnetic presence, glowing stage manner, and voice to die for, Mariza keeps reaching new heights, prompting rave reviews like BBC Radio's: "When Mariza sings, time stands still. Every word is sung with intense concentration, every note hit flawlessly. When she pauses for dramatic effect, we are all with her, caught in her trap". Macao was already caught by her charm in 2004 when the Cultural Centre presented the singer in sold out performances Now, after four years of rampant worldwide success, Mariza is eagerly welcomed again to CCM's grand stage, sharing with us her heart wrenching vocals and intricate guitars.
