Premiered in 1986, "Secret love in Peach Blossom Land" has been a sold-out drama for 23 years and won both audience and critical acclaim. Besides touring in Asia and USA, the play was adapted to the silver screen, featuring well-known actors like Brigette Lin, and honoured at international film festivals with several awards.
The production is a breathtaking drama where comedy and tragedy shares the stage and common stories are transformed by the prominent Taiwanese playwright-director, Stan Lai, into moving, captivating and meaningful theatre in a collective creation. Chinese TV stars and actors from National Theatre Company of China and Performance Workshop Theatre Taipei, two of the Mandarin-speaking greatest troupes, impress viewers with their wonderful improvisations.
The production portrays two companies mistakenly booked into the same venue for rehearsal. One is about an elderly looking for his long-lost love. The other is a farce about a cuckolded man in a secret paradise. Both plays were then merged in a comic clash of contrasting dialogue and styles, interweaving laughter and tears.
