There are so many reasons to go to Fisherman’s Wharf. It’s a must-see on most tourists’ itineraries. For local residents, it’s a great place for an afternoon or evening family outing, with something for pretty much everyone. It’s also a lovely spot to wander around at a leisurely pace and shop or just window shop or people watch, or just appreciate the wonderful harbor views from a different vantage point. You can “visit” the Potala Palace, a Roman amphitheater, watch a “volcano” erupt, and even enjoy a dinner the way they do in African villages.
While the Wharf itself is a colorful hodgepodge of many different styles, this restaurant may be the most exotic and unexpected of all, built in seemingly authentic African fashion, as a compound of rough-hewn but surprisingly comfortable dome-shaped huts with casually arranged woven chairs and banquettes and African-style wall hangings.
A small band of musicians entertains guests who can select from a reasonably priced buffet that includes a juicy and tender spit-roasted whole lamb, African chicken, roast baby pigeon, salads and plenty of fresh seafood, including salmon sushi, desserts like cheesecake, ice cream, and fresh fruit washed down with the special house cocktail named “lulala,” or wine from South Africa, Portugal, France and Australia.
After dinner it's only a few steps to some of the city’s most interesting night spots, both in Fisherman’s Wharf and in the surrounding neighborhood along the waterfront.
Africana is open only for dinner and accepts Visa MasterCard, and American Express. Call for reservations.
